Moraga Vineyards
Purchased over 40 years ago by Tom and Ruth Jones, the 16 acre estate of Moraga Vineyards is located in the hills of Bel Air,
a locale better known as a residential community in the suburbs of Los Angeles than a viticultural area. Regardless, eager to maximize the property’s Bordeaux-esk microclimate and soil, the couple decided to pursue winegrowing. The vineyard is located in the hillsides of a canyon bassin, slopes that were once an ancient seabed that was thrust upward by tectonic
movement. The vineyard's soils therefore still contain marine fossils and shells while also sharing some of the deep gravel beds found on the bassin floor. With the help of the late Roberto Quintana, the first grapes were planted in 1978. Today, there are ten small unique plots that each possess a distinct character and whose traits shine through in the wines from Moraga Vineyards.
